Intensive Care Service (ICS) department is responsible for the care and management of critically ill patients within the institution. The department is highly advances and organized.
The Department is headed by Brig. Gen. Dr. Ziyad K Al Otaibi. The major sections in ICS are GICU 1 & 2, SICU, EDICU and RRT. ICS is staffed by consultant intensivists, fellows, residents & interns along with nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians, social workers and an array of paramedical & support staff.
The total number of patients cared by ICS was 6,039 in 2023 with an overall mortality rate of 9.4% and a standardized mortality ratio (SMR) of 0.46 which is well below the international benchmark of 0.7. Our ICU 2023 length of stay (LOS) was 11.7 days which is a improvement from 2022's 11.9 days. The corrected LOS for 2023 was 6.4 days which is also an improvement from the 2022 corrected LOS of 7.2 days. The ICS 2023 Bed utilization was 66% which is an increase of 14.4% from the 2022 ICU bed utilization of 57.7%.
